Following the successful launch of the Manenberg Business Forum on Saturday 30 March, its steering committee calls on small businesses to register on their database.

This is the first registered business forum to be established in Manenberg.

According to its secretary general, Fareed Jansen, the forum is aimed at uniting and providing a platform for local businesses ahead of the planned multi-billion-rand development in the community.

Jansen says the R1.4bn upgrades will see two colleges built, a 650-bed hospital, upgrades of two schools and roads as well as other facilities.

The development is expected to start before the year 2022.Jansen says the forum currently works closely with the City of Cape Town and provincial government under a project called Community Action Plan for Manenberg, to provide participating businesses with necessary skills and it is their wish that all interested businessmen be involved.Jansen adds they currently have more than 30 businesses on board, with some of them not yet fully committed.

Jansen says: “We want to make sure that at least 60% of businesses benefitting from development projects within our community are from Manenberg.

”He says this does not mean other qualifying businesses will not be considered. With the establishment of the forum, Jansen says no government department will be allowed to implement any plans without consulting and engaging with the forum.

He says it is in this way that people will feel responsible for the growth of their community and have an input on what is happening.

“We will also be reducing the unemployment rate and curbing crime in our community.

The structure is non-discriminating, whether you have a criminal record or come from whatever background or race you are welcome.

”He says sometimes the rules, including checking criminal records, are the reasons some people struggle to change their lives after making mistakes.

“We have former gang members willing to be part of contributing for the betterment of the community, but their hands are tied.”
