At least four people were lucky to escape death after being shot in Lavender Hill over the weekend.

A 21-year-old victim was shot three times in the chest and once in his hand on Saturday in Eltister Road.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says on arrival officers found a crowd of people around the victim who was lying on the ground.

“The victim informed the police that the suspect fired several shots at him. He was transported to Victoria Hospital by an ambulance for medical treatment. Four 9mm cartridges were found on the scene. The motive for the shooting is allegedly gang related,” says Bartlett.

In a separate incident, on the same day at around 19:50, officers received a complaint of a shooting at Stone Court.

Bartlett says when officers arrived at the scene, they were told by the public that one victim had been shot and taken to Retreat Day Hospital and another was lying in Stone Court. “The officers found a 34-year-old woman lying near a tuck-shop in Stone Court. She sustained a gunshot wound to the right buttock. The victim was transported to Victoria Hospital.”

The first victim, a 23-year-old man, sustained a gunshot wound to his right ankle. Eight 9mm cartridges were found and one projectile was handed over to police by the ambulance driver, Bartlett says. The shooting was allegedly gang related.

On Sunday at about 07:35 Steenberg police officers responded to a shooting in St Thomas Street, where they found a 29-year-old victim sitting in his kitchen, bleeding. “The victim was on his way to work and when he opened the door he saw an unknown man with a firearm in his hand. The suspect fired several shots at him and the victim sustained wounds to his chest, nose and neck.”
