Local police are searching for four suspects in two separate robbery incidents.
Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman says two suspects are at large after they robbed a victim om Wednesday 3 August.

“On Wednesday at 06:35 a man and his friends were on the way to drop off one of the friends in Veld Road, Belgravia Estate.

The victim was approached by two unknown suspects. The suspects threatened the complainant with a firearm and demanded his (two cellphones),” Norman confirms.

She adds the suspects further threatened the victim by pulling him out of the vehicle and hitting him with a firearm.

The suspects fled the scene on foot. A case of armed robbery is being investigated.

On the same day, a 33-year-old man was also robbed in his shop in Thornton Road, Gleemor, says Norman.

“(The victim) was in his shop when two men entered and threatened him with a firearm and robbed him of R300. No shots were fired and no injuries sustained,” she says.

Norman says a case of business robbery is being investigated.

Earlier that morning, at 04:40, a man was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm.

“At 04:40 Athlone police were patrolling in Statice Heights in Kewtown when they noticed a 21-year-old man riding a bicycle. He left his bicycle when he saw the police and the officers went to look for him.

“They found him lying next to a house in Parsley Street. On searching the suspect the officers found a black 7.65mm pistol,” Norman says.
