Fraud on the rise in precinct

Reported fraud cases have increased dramatically in the Camps Bay precinct, due to dodgy online deals.

At a recent public safety meeting, Camps Bay Police Station commander, Captain Keith Chandler, stated that online fraud cases had soared in the precinct.

At the meeting, he stated that often sellers would ship goods, only to find that payment information had been falsified. Alternatively, buyers would make payment but would never receive their goods.

“Fraud cases linked to online selling and buying have increased tenfold over the past few years. It is not just a concern in Camps Bay, but nationwide,” he said.

According to Chandler, buyers and sellers create bogus bank accounts to dupe unsuspecting online bidders.

“The internet is used in all online fraud cases where individuals use sites such as Gumtree and OLX to sell and buy items of various values,” he said.

“This is not a crime that can be monitored by police. The onus is on the individual themselves.”

Chandler recommends that all online buyers and sellers verify all information prior to any transaction.

“Try not to do business with individuals outside of your own province – it will be easier to verify who the transaction is being conducted with. Cash transactions are always better. And last but not least, refrain from doing business online.”
