Tenders have been awarded in Hout Bay, Dido Valley, Harmony Park, Monwabisi and Strandfontein.

The tender for the Granger Bay site has been readvertised, mayor Patricia de Lille previously told People’s Post (“Water plans flow”, 7 November).

“As we are in the midst of a severe unprecedented drought which affects all in Cape Town, we must understand that we are all partners and we need all communities to share the responsibility so that we can get through this together with water augmentation and saving.

“We will supply while Capetonians save and by working together, we will make it through the drought,” she said.

The Granger Bay pump station is intended to be installed in the Oceana Yacht Club’s harbour and would consist of submersible pump sets installed on the still water side of the breakwater. The plant will operate on sea water reverse osmosis and is expected to be in place for two years (“Locals don’t want water plant close by”, People’s Post, 5 August).

The association says the plant will operate 24 hours a day and will most likely have diesel generators for several months as the site is not electrified.

“Cape Town certainly needs to find alternate sources of water urgently and we support all sensible measures.

“However, more appropriate sites for a desalination plant represent a greatly reduced environmental threat,” the association says.

“We have concluded that this is a battle worth fighting.”
