“This was submitted to Prasa, and many months of indecision and non-communication on their part followed.

“After about a year of frustration the offer was withdrawn and the developer spent his money elsewhere. It could have been an excellent little attraction for Muizenberg. In more recent months looters have been at work breaking in and taking what they can. It would appear the security at the station is not adequate to prevent this,” says Taylor.

With concerns about crime and looting of the room, residents still maintain it can be turned into something beautiful for the area.

Frank Bokhorst from the Muizenberg Community Policing Forum says although the room was a problem in the past he has not heard anything of late.

“There has been no progress. There are people sitting there and it’s a problem for people walking to the St James Walk. I have not heard anything recently but I will try and do something about it should we hear anything,” he says.

Riana Scott, Metrorail spokesperson, says the signal room is not used for operations. “As I understand it, it is a derelict signal cabin on the seaside of Muizenberg Station and earmarked for demolition. However, the disposal of state assets needs to happen in accordance with certain processes and permissions. Better to request our property management division, Prasa Corporate Real Estate Solutions (CRES), to assist,” she says.

Prasa had not responded by the time of going to print.
