On a personal note, Henkerman said he was living a full life.

“It’s now been 11-and-a half years and I feel absolutely amazing, I live a full life, I participate in sport and I have a full job – director of the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, thanks to Chris Barnard.

“I’m really grateful to be part of these celebrations because in a way there is a personal connection in a heart transplant,” he said.

The audience responded with chuckles of approval to his statement that all Capetonians had a connection to the hospital, even those who have never been inside it because when travelling to town, one has to pass the hospital and there is even a road (Hospital Bend) named after it.
