“I wanted to try something different. Something that was going to challenge me. It would have been easy for me to just go back to the hip-hop scene, but I challenged myself by doing a new way of gospel hip-hop. So we do our hip-hop moves, but to gospel music. A year later we are still here,” says Francis.

Along with Kingdom Kids and the South African Mountain Club, the children are taught more about life through dance and other means.

“This is about leadership. If the children out there can see them making it, them performing on SA’s Got Talent, them going to America so that they can see that this really works. For the girls to do that is to be role models in the community, because here are no role models. The men in this community are not role models. If the women can do that, if this generation be the generation who don’t fall pregnant unnecessary, don’t fall into that category of having a drug merchant as a boyfriend, a drug dealer for a boyfriend or a taxi guard as a boyfriend because he wears a pair of Nikes and has a silver chain. If they can step out of that mindset, then this is a success for us,” adds Francis.

He says he hopes to open up his own dance studio to expand the programme and teach more people, while he also advises young people in the community to choose their friends wisely, if they feel the need to have friends.

“This whole thing I went through was about friends; where I come from I had bad friends all along and I am only experiencing good friends now. If you have to have friends, choose good friends. You don’t even have to have friends, your family is enough. Family will be there forever for you, because they will be there through thick or thin for you. They will be coming to jail for you, they will bring you food in jail. Your friends won’t come for you.”
