According to the local community policing forum (CPF), it was a second fatal shooting in the area in a few days.

“This office can now confirm two murders and two attempted murders within the span of a week,” a CPF spokesperson said at the time.

Police also expressed concern.

Bruintjies says: “We started to pray, we marched from the church, through the community and chosen points where it was very busy. We invited people as we marched to tell people where we were gathering so they could come and listen.”

The gatherings took place at the corner of Glider Crescent and Lugmag Street.

“All of (the former offenders) changed their lives when they met the Lord Jesus Christ. They gave testimonies about how they found a way out and accepted Christ into their lives. They never looked back.

“What we are now facing is young guys wanting to be gangsters. If there is not a father figure, (boys) go and look for it outside. These gangsters take hold of these guys and give them everything. The former prisoners testify about those things – ‘there is no turning back, (prison) turns your life upside down’,” says Bruintjies.

He says Taakmag members’ message to the youth is: ‘I don’t have to live this life, and it’s not worth it. I can get out of this, I just have to do what these guys are doing, what they are talking about’.

He says the platform also gives parents who have struggles with their children, an opportunity to get answers. He says the former prisoners gave testimonies on how they managed to change their ways.

“We are excited about this, it is worth it to tell somebody that there is a way out,” says Bruintjies.
