The cost of the line marker was in the region of R20 000, which was not the only new development at the facility.

“The City has now undertaken to install a borehole at the Allenby Drive Sports Centre. Work is underway and we hope to see the completion of that project within the next week or two. That is really going to enhance the facility there, so we are looking at putting up some huge storage tanks there in order for them to have sufficient water to be able to look after the facility,” explains Southgate.

There are also plans for a cricket pitch cover to be installed at the grounds, which will further enhance the facility’s water-saving capability.

“This is part of the ongoing plan to upgrade our sport facilities, parks and public open spaces. Every year I try to allocate some money to each facility. You will see the improvements that were made to the St Augustine’s Cricket Ground. They got a new veranda, a new site screen as well as new showers inside. They got a completely revamped kitchen in the last financial year. They are well looked after now and I have indicated that they will have to rest for a while, because there won’t be any more money coming to them.

“We are going to have to look at upgrading the other facilities in the area.”
