“Max is my miracle rescue dog. He guards me during my patrols,” says Derek Bluck, the chairperson of Harlyn Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) in Claremont.

Bluck shares his feel-good story of how a pitiful little pup that was found roaming on the streets has turned into his guardian. According to him, Max was two months old when he was found and brought to him.

Bluck says he feels it is important to share the story, because as members of the NHW, they have discovered that people are ignorant towards lost animals on the streets. They wish to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and loving all animals.

Bluck says his experience with his rescue dog has taught him that there is a reward for every good gesture you do in life.

“When I first met Max, I immediately took him to the SPCA because I had no intention of keeping him. I had my own dogs, but when the SPCA told me they could not identify his owners as he had no chip, I felt sorry for him and wanted to give him a home until someone came to claim him. No-one ever came. I did the right thing to get ownership and here we are, celebrating two years together and he is now my only dog. Who would have thought?” he says.

Bluck introduced Max to the NHW and says he is his guardian angel. He says dogs can sense things faster that humans and they communicate with you if something is wrong.

“He keeps me safe during my regular neighbourhood watch patrols. If there is something wrong that I have not observed, Max will alert me. I trust him in my car. He is overprotective and takes instructions. Max is the best dog I have ever owned and I am thankful to Junior Kalamba of a local security company for bringing Max to me,” says Bluck.

Kalamba found Max in April 2016 and took him to Bluck because he thought he would know who Max belonged to.

“I was working a night shift when I drove past a tiny miserable puppy. I was touched and decided to save it. I took it to Bluck as he is popular within the community. It is amazing to see that they have grown so close and Max is put to good use within the community. As a security company, it is our duty to assure the safety of everything and I am proud I could give Max to a loving home.”

Kalamba agrees that dogs play a crucial role in safety and security and says his company has always encouraged its clients to own a dog.
