Patrons seeking postal services from the Woodstock Post Office have to turn to other areas to get the services they require.

This comes after the Post Office, situated on Victoria Road, closed its doors on Monday 11 February due to rental issues.

This year’s closure comes just two months after it closed in December (“Frustration over closure”, People’s Post, 11 December 2018).

Just like last year an A4 page was pasted on the building’s glass wall: “We are temporarily closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Recorded mail dated as from 12 February will be held at Mowbray Post Office,” read the notice.

A customer service number and an apology also appeared on the page.

South African Post Office (Sapo) spokesperson for the Eastern and Western Cape Martie Gilchrist said attention is focused on solving the matter.

“This is more an inconvenience than a disruption as the mail is still being delivered, although to Mowbray Post Office,” Gilchrist said.

She apologised to patrons on behalf of Sapo and said they were making an effort to resolve the matter.

Asked if Sapo was not considering buying a building to avoid these incidents in future, Gilchrist said that was not on the table.

“The Post Office is not at this stage considering owning its own building, mostly because of the capital outlay involved.”

When a People’s Post journalist got to the premises, a homeless man sitting in front of the entrance said that people who found the premises closed were frustrated.

“Many people who come here are frustrated by the closure, most of them expecting important mail,” said the man.

He said many young people go to the premises every day to post job and university applications.

“It is not the first time this has happened and many people are depended on the post office to apply for jobs,” he said.
