What was planned as a weekend away for three local students from IIE’s Varsity College turned out to be victorious as they “miraculously” scooped a gold prize at the (Freshpack) Fitness Triathlon team relay in Clanwilliam on Saturday 6 October. They all participated in the triathlon for the first time and did not expect to achieve much. The triathlon comprised running done by David Sher, swimming by Benjamin Sack and cycling done by their captain, Jason van’t Slot.Van’t Slot says they went to the event with an idea of embarking on an adventure and having fun. However, when they got there they knew they had to win. And so they pulled together and gave it their best. He says it was humbling to learn they had won. “We did not take it seriously – for us it was about having a good time and getting exposure to the good feel of this wonderful spot. We even started five minutes late which made us doubt we would make it. It was all because of the team spirit and dedication that we covered the gap and not just put our names on the map but that of our college as well.”Sher adds that there was no basic training for the competition. The college’s events coordinator, Musa Khumalo, says triathlon is starting to gather momentum at the campus and may well be offered as a new sport at [the college].
