Capetonians packed Islamia College hall in Lansdowne last Saturday for a gala dinner in aid of the Shukrul Mubeen education board’s madrassah building restoration project. More than 500 people attended the event, including former students of the Islamic school (“Gala dinner for broken building”, People’s Post, 14 November).

“The event went very well; we were overwhelmed and appreciative of the support we received. The community pledged a substantial sum of money toward the restoration project. We urge those who were unable to attend to donate towards the cause,” says Riedwaan Kenny, chairperson of the education board.

Kenny says attendees enjoyed an evening of food and entertainment.

“Guests were entertained by comedian Yaaseen Barnes. The guest speakers were myself, Imam Gasan Moos, Imam of the Shukrul Mubeen mosque and principal of the madrassah and Sheikh Shahied Esau, a former student and teacher of Shukrul Mubeen. Esau is also former speaker of the Western Cape provincial legislature and currently a member of the national parliament,” he says.

“The main message of the evening was appealing for assistance from the community – not only for financial assistance but if you are able to assist according to your expertise it will also help a great deal. The replacement of the roof is the top priority of the project, thereafter all the other upgrades will take place.”
