Gang shootings in Steenberg precinct

Police are still searching for the suspects in an alleged gang shooting in which a shop keeper from Cafda was wounded and a 26-year-old man was shot dead..

Steenberg police received a complaint of a shooting incident that occurred at the corner of 12th Avenue and Walton road, Retreat at about 21:05 last week Wednesday.

On their arrival at the scene they noticed a group of people standing around man who was lying on the ground. The 26-year-old victim, allegedly a member of the Junky Funky Kids gang, sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and at the back of his head. He was declared as dead on the scene by paramedics.

The community informed the police of a second man, a shop keeper from Cafda, that was also shot in his stomach and was then taken to the hospital by his friends.

Eight cartridges were found on the scene. The suspects are still at large and Steenberg police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

In a separate incident, on the next day at about 02:15 Steenberg police responded to a shooting incident at St Bernard Street, Lavender Hill. Police were taken to a house where they found 27-year-old victim who had sustained two gunshot wounds to his stomach. It is alleged that the victim was approached by about 10 known gang members and they shot at him.

The victim informed the police that he is a member of the 28s and that he was walking with members of the Junky Funky Kids. One cartridge and one projectile were found on the crime scene. The victim was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital for medical treatment. A case of attempted murder was registered for investigation and no arrests have been mad.

On Friday last week at about 20:45 the Steenberg police attended to a shooting incident at Grindal Avenue, Lavender Hill.

On their arrival they were informed that four people were shot in a drive-by shooting. It is alleged that the deceased and the victims were gambling under a lamp post at the bus stop. The suspects fired several shots at the victims from a metallic blue Toyota Tazz with an unknown registration number. A 30-year-old man from Fawley Court sustained gunshot wounds to the chest and left side. He was declared dead on the scene.

The other three aged 14,15 and 27 sustained injuries on different parts of their bodies. All the victims allegedly belongs to the Corner Boys gang. The victims ran in different directions and the car sped off. The injured victims were taken to Retreat Day Hospital for medical treatment. Four 9mm cartridges were found on the scene. The suspects are unknown at this stage and a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened.

On Saturday at about 03:15 officials of the Crime Prevention Unit were busy with patrols in Lakeview, Retreat, when they noticed a suspicious person riding on a bicycle. When he saw the marked police van he threw a bag in the street and jumped into a yard. The police then drove to the next street and when they returned they noticed the accused hiding a bag in the yard. In the bag was an Armson paintball rifle, pepper spray and a music box. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested and detained for the possession of an imitation firearm; possession of dangerous weapon and the possession of suspected stolen property.
