The swift action by Italian Neighbourhood Watch in Grassy Park along with the Grassy Park police resulted in the arrest of two murder suspects on Thursday 8 September.

The arrests came after police received information about a shooting at about 20:15 in 7th Avenue.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the police responded to the scene.

“On arrival the body of a 26-year-old man from Retreat – also affiliated to a rival gang in Retreat – was found with a gunshot wound to the head and side of his body. Several cartridges were found on the scene in the road. The suspects then fled the scene on foot,” Kleinsmith confirms.

Neighbourhood watch patrols were being conducted at the same time of the incident and Italian Neighbourhood Watch reacted when they saw two men acting suspiciously.

“The members also heard the shot and gave chase after the two men, who came running from 7th Avenue. They then saw one of the men pitching something into a yard in Janari Road, Grassy Park,” Kleinsmith explains.

She adds the patrollers then heard something breaking – “like glass shattering”.

“Officers still proceeded with the chase and caught up with the two men. They then went back to the premises where they saw the one suspect throw something in the yard and found a Taurus 9mm firearm with its serial number in tact on the spot where part of the glass sliding door was shattered,” she confirms.

The suspects were arrested and the firearm was handed to the police. Both suspects were arrested for murder.

The two suspects, aged 18 and 29, are affiliated to rival gangs in Steenberg.

The “incident (is) gang related,” Kleinsmith says.

The station commander, Colonel Shawn Van Wyk, thanked Italian Neighbourhood Watch members for a job well done and for their contribution in the fight against crime.
