Celebrations are the order of the day for Garden Village Primary School in Maitland as they celebrate moving into a new school, and they’re 90 years young.

That’s right, young – because according to principal Gillian October it will still be playing a major part in the education of children for a long time to come.

She explained they have also moved into their new school building after 90 years and they were very happy to be celebrating this milestone. “It first opened its doors in 1926 on 26 April as the Methodist Primary School and operated in the church building for 60 years with additional classes at the Anglican Church, Moravian Church and the community hall,” she said.

“With growth in numbers by 1985 the department was forced to erect prefab classrooms that was in operation until the announcement that we would be getting our new school which has just been completed this year.”

Last week the school celebrated the start of their birthday celebrations with a party at the school and then a day of fun at the local sportsfield.

“We’ve still got some celebrations planned for the rest of the year where we want our former learners to get involved. We want to show the learners that they have a lot of positive role-models who came from this school that they can look up to.”
