Get a load of these worms

2017-04-11 06:00

Beat the clock in a fun recycling challenge and you could walk away with a special goodie bag. That’s one of the activities on offer at the Waste to Wealth recycling expo in Fish Hoek on Saturday 22 April.

One lucky family will win a year’s membership to the Two Oceans Aquarium in a “recycling tips and wishes” draw.

The event, from 09:00 to 14:00 in the major hall of Fish Hoek Civic Centre, is organised by the Far South Peninsula Community Forum with the City of Cape Town’s solid waste department. It aims to raise awareness of recycling – what can be recycled, which organisations use the different recyclables and how you can make money through recycling.

There will be a children’s activity corner and refreshments by the Friends of Fish Hoek Library. A wide range of beautiful and useful items made from recyclables will be for sale. Exhibitors include Ilitha lomsa from Masiphumelele, False Bay Handicraft Club, Shwe Shwe, Karabos Media and Shonaequip.

Green Guerillas will be demonstrating their domestic, never-fill wormery bin, useful for dog owners. “When you drive over Chapman’s Peak and you never fail to be amazed by its beauty – that’s how I feel by about worms,” says Akim Riemer, who runs Green Guerillas, a Sunnydale-based business that promotes urban agriculture.

Bay Primary School will be demonstrating how to make eco bricks from 1.5F plastic bottles, now used for constructing buildings.

Toddlers and parents of Noordhoek Valley Educare Centre and from Masiphumelele and Ocean View will be displaying crafts from recyclables.
