A Tafelsig man has been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a five-year-old girl.

The man was pointed out by the girl and arrested on Sunday, says City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason.

Officers of the Law Enforcement’s transport enforcement unit were on duty in Mitchell’s Plain when residents told them of the rape.

“The members went to investigate but the 49-year-old suspect fled the scene. They took the victim to Mitchell’s Plain Police Station where the brave young girl informed the police officers she knew the suspect and showed them where he lived in Tafelsig,” says Dyason.

Police then went to the house and arrested the man.

“In the process police found the man in possession of an illegal firearm,” says Dyason.

The girl was taken to hospital and will remain there for the time being, confirms Dyason.
