A 13-year-old Woodstock girl is doing her bit to show support to people living with cancer.

Since the age of five the Vista Nova Primary School learner, Kendra Bitnell has been cutting off her hair and donating it to cancer patients around Cape Town.

She has since received a certificate of appreciation from the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) for her efforts to donate her hair.

Her mother, Samantha says that she is proud of her daughter for showing support for cancer patients at such a tender age.

“She is such a gentle, loving soul who makes everyone around her happy. That is why I am proud of her,” Samantha said.

The family has friends and family members who are affected by cancer and that is how she decided to show her support.

It takes Kendra about two years to grow her hair fully and when it is at the length she feels it is long enough to donate, she cuts off a ponytail and donates it to the Cancer Association in Mowbray.

Samantha said that this is a worthy cause and advised parents to encourage their children to do similar acts.

“Everyone should try and make a difference, no matter how small it is. That makes a huge impact on people’s lives.”

On Monday 4 March, a Cape Town newspaper published Kendra’s story under the headline “Ailing girl, 13, shaves her hair for Cansa for the fourth time”, but Samantha rubbished the article.

“Kendra is not sick, she is a happy healthy little girl who has cerebral palsy due to oxygen deprivation at birth,” she explained.

She said that she did not want to acknowledge the article.

Cansa is an organisation dedicated to fighting the battle against cancer and hosts a number of campaigns including the ever popular annual Cansa Shavathon.V For more information visit
