Girl doing well after train accident

A toddler from Retreat who fell out of a moving train is back at home and doing well.

She was discharged last Wednesday and is recovering further at home.

The girl, who was travelling on the train with her mother, father and siblings last Monday, was flung out of the train when the doors suddenly opened while the train was in motion.

She was picked up in the middle of the rails before she was rushed to the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, where she spent a few days in and out of a coma due to her severe head injuries.

Warrant Officer Keith Chandler, spokesperson of Diep River police, says: “It is alleged that the doors of the moving train were open. The girl was travelling with her mother and two siblings. The girl suffered injuries and was rushed to Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“The mother and siblings received counselling at the police station. No criminal cases were opened.”

Riana Scott, Metrorail spokesperson, also confirms the incident.

“The only factual evidence at our disposal currently is that a toddler was found lying between the rails between Heathfield and Diep River stations at 06:30. Metrorail’s first priority was to summon medical assistance and the child was taken to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.

“The Retreat railway police are investigating the incident. We await the outcome of the police investigation to confirm the facts of the incident. Social media reports doing the rounds are unconfirmed.

“We encourage any eyewitnesses to immediately provide information to the police to assist in their investigation.

“Commuters are advised not to board or disembark from moving trains, not to open train doors in transit and to not travel between carriages,” she says.
