A five-year-old Hanover Park girl was shot and is currently being treated in the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital after she was caught in gang crossfire on Tuesday night. Philippi police spokesperson Captain Lance Goliath says the girl was shot at about 20:15. “A shooting occurred at Algoa Court, Hanover Park. The girl was playing outside when shots were fired. “She was shot in her back by a stray bullet which exited from her stomach,” Goliath says. The gunmen are unknown and still at large.According to Goliath the girl was transported to Heideveld Emergency Centre to be stabilised and was then taken to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital.A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation.He adds no other people were shot or injured during this shooting. The girl’s grandmother, who did not want to be named, says the girl was not doing well after she had been taken in for an operation on Wednesday morning. “She was slipping in and out of consciousness. It wasn’t going too well,” she says. At the time of going to print the girl was still in hospital. Police station commander Dennis Abels has urged community members to come forward with information.
