Give kids

2018-07-17 06:01

Fine Music Radio (FMR) celebrates its birthday this month, and the radio station’s birthday wish is to raise enough funds to cover 200 music therapy sessions.

FMR, whose birthday is during July, is seeking the assistance of the community to help raise R40 000.

A donation of R200 will afford one child an hour-long music therapy session.

FMR, which was founded in September 2002, is an NGO that was co-founded by its director Sunelle Fouché.

This organisation aims to turn children in despair into children with hope by means of musical therapy. “It’s a strength-based intervention, working with what is whole and healthy within the child, in spite of the disabilities and trauma they have experienced,” says Fouché.

One may think that music is a luxury and in our current economic state even think that it’s an expensive one, but Fouché claims that music is not a luxury but a lifeline to these children.

“To children with debilitating illness who are locked in a world of their own, music offers a way to communicate. To young children who have been silenced by abuse and neglect, music groups provide a safe space where their voice matters.”

V FMR, which has about 490 children attending music therapy sessions annually, has reached the quarter mark towards their birthday wish and anyone wanting to contribute can do so at www.fmr.co.za.
