An Oranjezicht gymnast is flying her country’s flag high.

Geneva Mae Cohen (11) qualified to represent the South African Gymnastics Federation in the Zone 5 competition, which took place in Namibia in December.

Team South Africa won the gold medal, with Namibia winning the silver medal and Zimbabwe taking the bronze.

She was chosen to compete for her country when she represented the Western Cape at the National Gym Games in Pretoria in October last year. She won four medals at the event and was ranked in the top three in her age group.

“I was so excited and felt so proud when I was selected to represent the South African Gymnastics Federation in Namibia and I was awarded my South African Gymnastics Federation colours,” she says.

“When I wear my South African tracksuit I am filled with a sense of pride. When we won the gold medal for Team South Africa it was the cherry on the top for me.”

A rhythmic gymnast from the Dynamic Rhythmic Gymnastics Club in Rosebank, Cohen started gymnastics at the age of six.

“In rhythmic gymnastics we compete with different apparatus and dance with our apparatus to music. I have a passion for dancing and I really enjoy the challenge of the throws and catches with the apparatus while dancing to the music. It is quite difficult to choose my favourite apparatus, but if I had to, I would say clubs and hoops are my favourite, but I also enjoy balls and ribbons very much,” she says.

And the young gymnast’s future is bright, she believes.

“I will keep working hard and stay committed to the sport that I love, and I hope to continue winning more medals.”
