Claremont ratepayers were commended for their good payment record at the Claremont Improvement District Company (CIDC) annual general meeting held at Park Inn by Radisson Hotel in Newlands last Thursday.

“This reflects the Claremont ratepayers’ exemplary payment record and low incidence of bad debts. A good performance in anyone’s terms. So while we, the CIDC, pat ourselves on the back, you, the ratepayers, should also take a bow,” said David Stoll, the chairperson of the CIDC.

He said the financial statements for the year under review reflect a business on a solid footing with ample reserves. According to him, the CIDC made a profit of R747 792, which is an increase of R309 731 as compared to R400 000 last year. It is for this reason he said their report reveals that Claremont, “in many respects” is booming.

He said that as the CIDC, the good financial record and the successes of their developments would eventually make what they have always hoped for, which is seeing what is “currently an eyesore on our landscape” being allowed to flourish into a genuine mixed-use precinct offering retail office and student accommodation.

They are currently hoping to see about six property developments completed before the end of the next financial year.

The CIDC’s executive manager, Abdul Kerbelker, added that their success must be attributed to the strength of the partnerships they hold, and the dedication of the partners they work with. “The CIDC cannot do this alone. Our work is ultimately made possible with the support of all our stakeholders and most importantly, the levy payers. I would like to especially acknowledge the role that Securitas, police, City of Cape Town, Straatwerk, the Chrysalis Academy, U-Turn and The Haven have played, and continue to play, in helping us to achieve our goals.”
