Mitchell’s Plain gospel duo Eclectic Soul is making a name for themselves as a fresh new sound.

Blanche and Whitney Olivier have been working with producer Brilynn van Rooyen since being finalists in the “Sing for the King” gospel voice competition.

They’ll be launching their debut album Cup-A-Soul at Galieans Gospel Mission in Woodridge, Mitchell’s Plain this weekend.

Eclectic Soul comes from a musical family. Whitney says she and Blanche are like sisters, even though they are actually aunt and niece.

Although Blanche is a social worker and Whitney a student, the two, who live together, agree that their main focus is their music.

Blanche and Whitney have been singing together for about 10 years. Besides performing as Eclectic Soul, they’ve also sung with local gospel groups like the Reasons Community Choir, Totally Committed and the Korr.

They’ve also shared stages with many well-known names, including Jonathan Rubain, Sammy Weber, Neville D, Vicky Sampson and Joyous Celebration and were part of the second season of Clash of the Choirs South Africa last year.

After making it to the top five of the “Sing for the King” gospel voice competition, Eclectic Soul have already released their debut single “You Are”, which was written and produced by Brilynn from Crazy World Productions. He is also the man behind the rest of their album with its fresh pop sound.

“The Cup-a-Soul album is an album very different to many other gospel albums,” Whitney says, adding that it shows off their vocal abilities and versatility in terms of genres.

“The album is definitely for all ages. It has a very modern sound and hype but yet has serenity to connect with listeners on an emotional level.”

Blanche and Whitney have also had the opportunity to be mentored by former Liquiddeep frontman Zyion, who features on the song “Joy” which he wrote together with Brilynn for the women.

To add to the big names supporting them, their vocal harmonies have had another boost thanks to the help of performer and Idols musical director RJ Benjamin.

For their album launch on Saturday, Eclectic Soul will be joined by support acts Swiff D, Sebastian Keys, D.O.E.P, Shermer and Jason Pretorius.

Because their event falls in the middle of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against women and child abuse, the women are also showing their heart by partnering with the Safeline child abuse treatment and prevention centre.

Eclectic Soul will be donating a percentage of the ticket sales to Safeline, which provides counselling to young victims of sexual abuse along with a supportive service to their families and creates awareness about abuse in the community.

Music fans attending the launch are also asked to consider bringing donations of toys and clothes for Safeline’s Mitchell’s Plain office. V The Cup-A-Soul album launch takes place at the Galieans Gospel Mission at 18:00. Tickets cost R60 or R100 including the CD.
