The national crime statistics for the financial year, from April 2015 to March 2016, were released on Friday 2 September.
Contact crimes in the Grassy Park precinct increased to 2% difference since last year – citing a 33 total case difference, with 1467 cases logged this year.
There was a 2% increase on murder cases when 42 cases were reported compared to the previous years’ 41 cases. Sexual offences increased by 19% to 76 cases.
Common robberies decreased by just under 1% to 122 cases and robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 9.5% to 276 cases.
Property-related crimes increased by an overall 5% with a 75 case difference compared to the previous year.
Burglaries at non-residential premises increased by 26% when compared to the previous year’s 155 cases.
Theft out of or from motor vehicles decreased by 6% with 517 reported this year.
Commercial crime in the area increased from 79 reported cases to 99 cases, bringing a 25% increase.
Under the category of crimes detected as a result of police action, drug-related crimes increased by four cases from 1 374 cases to 1 378 – a 0.3% increase.
Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased from 55 cases to 89 this year – the highest recorded in 10 years since April 2006.
The subcateory of aggravated robbery decreased by 10%. However, carjacking, which falls in this category, increased by 145.5% with 27 cases reported compared to the 11 in the previous year. This is also the highest recorded in a decade.
Zero cases for robbery of cash in transit vans and zero cases for bank robberies were reported.
Robberies at residential premises decreased by 50% to six cases.
