Grassy Park United notch up eighth win

2016-02-16 06:00

Grassy Park United have notched up their eight victory of the season following their away triumph against Ikapa Sporting in a Safa Western Cape regional ABC Motsepe League encounter at the Symphony Park sports complex this weekend.

The 1-0 win, much to the delight of their coach Theo Hempe, saw Grassy Park experience a change in fortune after a string of draws and a few losses in recent weeks.

Hempe, a former Milano United mentor, was indeed a happy camper to see his players turn in an industrious performance to dethrone the Ikapa side deservedly with a fine brand of counter-attack soccer.

Shaun Daniels scored the all important goal in the second half.

The second division club now occupies fourth place in the standings, obtaining 29 points from their 16 assignments, with the welcome three points Hempe’s lads earned ensuring they overtook Ikapa for fourth position.

Ikapa now have to be content with the fifth spot with 28 points from 16 matches, which consist of eight victories, four draws and just three defeats.

It must be mentioned that Grassy Park United’s new goalkeeper Tyron Ward, in the place of Cheslyn Ravens, played a blunder. He kept a clean sheet by making breathtaking saves that kept his side in the game and helped them secure the three points.

Meanwhile, the defending league champions and current log leaders, Glendene United, once again cemented their top sport with a valuable point away from home when they played to a 1-1 draw against Steenberg United at the Philippi Stadium.

Bradley August’s Glendene United side now boast 38 points from 17 games and have a three-point lead over second-placed Hellenic (with 35 points). They are four points better than Steenberg United, who occupy third place and have played one fewer game.

The weekend’s other results: The Magic 2, Ramblers 1; RC Athletico 0, Mitchell’s Plain United 0; Ajax Cape Town 2, Atlantic Nacional 0; Crystal Palace 2, Black Cats 0; Hellenic 1, Zizwe United 1; Barcelona 4, Milano United 0.
