Hellenic Football Club have kept their league aspirations alive following their 4-1 home victory against a lethargic Grassy Park United side in a Safa Western Cape regional ABC Motsepe League encounter at the UCT astroturf field on Saturday.

While Hellenic, affectionately known as the “Greek Gods”, are on song in their league campaign, Theo Hempe’s Grassy Park United are now singing the blues.

United, together with Ikapa Sporting were the only teams in the top five to suffer defeats.

Sporting fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Steenberg United.

The two teams now sit on 34 and 33 points from 19 matches and, with the gap widening between them and the top, their chances of claiming a stake of the league trophy is slim.

Glendene United, the defending league champions, fought a tough battle to beat RC Athletico 1-0 in Kensington on Friday after being kept to a 1-1 draw by United in a mid-week fixture.

Glendene United maintain their position at the top of the league standings.

Glendene United have 42 points after 20 matches and Hellenic are second with 41 points after 19 matches.

Third-place Steenberg United, on 37 points, have played 18 games and simply cannot be ruled out from the league race.

The results confirm that all three front runners are very much in with a chance of wearing the league crown. It would give the champions an opportunity to strike it big at the promotion national play-offs for a berth in the national first division competition.

Nevertheless Hempe’s United side was unable to continue its good form. Team members appeared to have tired legs and as a result, never really got into gear.

Nevertheless, the Greek Gods never looked in danger against the Southern Suburbs visitors. They held a 1-0 lead for the better part of the first half thanks to Slovo Mrawa’s goal. Waseem George made no mistake to level matters for United.

After the start of the match in the second half, the Greek Gods found the back of the net three more times and made full use of their chances in goals by Fabian “Tucker” Wareley, Mickyle Jackson and Thando Booi. The team was without its top marksman Alfonso Fraser, who is serving a three-match suspension.
