A Vanguard Estate man who went on the run after the grenade he brought home exploded injuring six teens, has been caught.

Manenberg police say the man was caught in the early hours of Friday morning dancing at a popular nightclub in Barrydale.

Police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett says the incident occurred on Monday 5 December when six people aged between 15 and 20 found the grenade and started playing with it. He explains the grenade exploded and resulted in one person losing his hand and several others being injured including the man’s son.

Bennett says the 48-year-old man who works for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) went on the run and after evading police for two months was caught partying at the night club.

The father, now faces various charges and is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court soon.
