With increasing cases of theft out of motor vehicles and house break-ins in the precinct, Mitchell’s Plain police have issued tips to help residents safeguard themselves.Theft out of motor vehicle:

. Make sure doors and windows are closed and locked.

. Do not leave valuables like cellphones, laptops, handbags or money in your vehicle – especially if they are visible to opportunists.

. Put your valuables in the boot.

. Park your vehicle in a safe and secure place.House break-ins

. When leaving your residence or going to sleep, make sure all doors and windows are locked, including double storeys and balconies.

. Inform the police, friends and neighbours when you are going away for a long period and leave a contact number. A register will be completed at the police station.

. Inform the police of suspicious people in your neighbourhood.

. Burglars are more active in winter months. If you hear any suspicious sounds, call the police.

. Do not buy stolen property.
