A 36-year-old Mitchell’s Plain man was arrested after he was found in possession of a firearm and ammunition on Sunday 25 September.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says they were informed about the incident during visible policing patrols.

“On Sunday at about 16:45, Grassy Park police were busy with complaints and patrols when they noticed a white Opel Astra parking in St Michaels Road, Grassy Park. When searching the vehicle, officers found a .38 special firearm, with six rounds in the chamber. The man was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition,” Kleinsmith says.

The serial numbers of the firearm was tested and it was found the firearm belongs to a state department. The case is under investigation. The suspect appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
