Gun seized, man arrested

2018-01-16 06:01

Manenberg police arrested a 35-year-old man for the illegal possession of a firearm on Saturday.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, the man was arrested after officers patrolling hotspot areas saw two men walking down Duinefontein Road towards the Caltex service station.

“As they approached, the men then split and ran in different directions. The one man ran towards Storms River Road. As the suspect got to Storms River, he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the officer.

“The officer had no choice but to fire a shot at the suspect. The suspect fell to the ground and police could then search him and remove the firearm from him. It was discovered that the firearm was a replica toy gun,” says Bennett.

The suspect was injured in his foot and was taken to Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment.

“As the officers were busy on the scene, residents pelted the police vehicles with stones.

‘Officers had to withdraw from the scene. Attacks on police by the community during the execution of duties will not be tolerated. It is worrying that when the police are executing their functional duties, the community openly attacks the police, yet the very same community complains about lack of service, corruption and no visibility.

“The community should not criminalise themselves by this criminal action,” Bennett urges.

He adds that they remain committed to serving the community and encourages residents to partner with them in order to make Manenberg safe.

V Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call Manenberg Police Station on 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
