A 35-year-old man has been convicted for the illegal possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

The Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court handed down a sentence on Monday 27 March against Roswell Smith.

Mitchell’s Plain police arrested him in December 2014 when he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and six live rounds of ammunition in Symphony Walk, Eastridge.

Smith was found guilty on two counts.

Count one was for the possession of a firearm and he was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, of which two years are suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of possession of a firearm during the period. Count two was for the possession of ammunition, for which he was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment.

His sentences will run together.

Brigadier Cass Goolam, commander of Mitchell’s Plain Police Station, has welcomed the sentence, saying this verdict sends a strong message that the courts are serious about sentencing in these types of offences as often one firearm might be used to commit several crimes.

“We will continue tirelessly to clamp down on crime in the area. We urge the community to form part of the structures and to contact their respective sector commander with information,” he says.
