Officers of the Steenberg crime prevention unit were busy patrolling in Military Road, Lavender Hill when they heard gunshots going off near Depsiton Crescent and Military Road on Sunday 23 April.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says police officers went to the area and saw an unknown man running in Depsiton Crescent.

“When the man saw the police car he turned around and fired two shots at the officers and he ran to an alley in Epsten Road. The officers retaliated by firing at the man and they saw him throwing a black firearm away.

“The officers gave chase and arrested the man in Drury Court, Lavender Hill. A black CZ75 pistol with one magazine, hammer drawn back, one round in the chamber and one round in the magazine were retrieved. The serial number of the firearm was filed off. The officers did not sustain any injuries,” says Bartlett.

The man was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and a prohibited firearm and attempted murder.

The 24-year-old has appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

V Anyone with information about illegal activities is requested to call Steenberg police on 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
