A gunman who opened fire on police in Hanover Park on Monday (27 February) has been arrested.

Philippi police spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, says the shooting followed a murder earlier on Monday where a 40-year-old man was killed in Howick Court.

He says following the murder, police along with other law enforcement agencies embarked on an operation to find the perpetrator and at about 17:15 while searching a house in Galloway Court, they came under fire.

Goliath says a male suspect opened fire on police officers while on a white bakkie. He says police returned fire and chased after the suspect, but nobody was injured.

“The suspect fled on foot for several blocks from where he fired shots at police. Police apprehended the 26-year-old suspect at a house in Lansur Road in Hanover Park in which he attempted to hide. Police confiscated a 9mm Vector pistol, a magazine and live ammunition. The serial number of the gun was filed off. The suspect was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to the firearms and ammunition act.”

Goliath says the investigation continues and ballistic tests will be done to determine if the gun could be linked with the murder earlier yesterday.

Acting station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Desmond Laing condemned the attack on police and urges the public to come forward with information on crime being committed in the broader Philippi area.

“Police will continue working around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators of crime and bring them to book. Philippi police will maintain a zero tolerance approach towards criminals.”

Anyone with information about crime in the precinct can call the police station on 021 695 1500 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
