Gunman sentenced

A young man has been sentenced for a Rocklands shooting.

On Tuesday 7 July 2015 at 20:21 Mitchell’s Plain police attended a complaint of a shooting in Strandloper Street, Rocklands.

On arrival police discovered that the victim, an 11-year-old girl had been shot.

Police received information about the suspect on the scene and did patrols in the area.

They spotted the suspect and arrested him, finding a firearm and ammunition in his possession.

On Friday 26 August the Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court handed down a sentence to the accused.

The accused was 17-years-old at the time of the commission of the offences.

The accused, who faced charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, was found guilty on six counts.

In terms of the Child Justice Act, the accused is sentenced to compulsory residence for a period of three years or until he reaches the age of 21 years at Bonnytown Child and Youth Care Centre.

On the first count of attempted murder, he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment of which three years is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of murder, attempted murder of assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm during the period of suspension. On the second and third counts of attempted murder, he was sentence to five and three years respectively.

The fourth count of “pointing of a firearm” earned him a year imprisonment and the possession of unlicensed firearm earned him a further five years, of which two are suspended. One year was handed out for possession of ammunition.
