Gutsy Crusaders slay Tygers

2018-01-16 06:01

A gutsy performance by Grassy Park Crusaders put an end to Bellville Tygers’ unbeaten season with a 3-1 victory in Grassy Park on Saturday.

Tygers’ normal dominant hitting ability was kept in check by the pitching duo of Grant Robertson and Lucien Swartz.

Robertson started for Crusaders, returning with figures of five innings pitched, three hits conceded, no runs, two walks and two strike-outs.

Swartz’s figures showed four innings pitched, also giving up three hits and striking out three Tygers hitters.

Swartz did not give any walks, and Tygers scored an unearned run in the sixth inning. Crusaders took advantage of wayward pitching from Tygers starter Dayton Williams by scoring two runs in the first and one run in the third inning.

Williams pitched 2.2 innings, giving away four hits, walking six and striking out one Crusaders hitter. He was briefly replaced by Jonathan Phillips who then made way for Kevin Townsend to pitch the last five innings. Both teams struggled to group their hits together, with only Warren Adams (3/4) and Ashwin Kleintjes (2/3) of Crusaders and two hits from Josh Halverson of Tygers being consistent.

Tygers’ only run was unearned in the sixth inning when Crusaders made two errors. Tygers made one error and left nine runners on base. Crusaders left eight runners on base.

In Mitchell’s Plain, the home team Westridge Yankees shouted out Maitland Giants 5-0 despite being out-hit five hits to two.

Yankees took advantage of the eight walks and seven errors made by Giants.

Chad Eksteen (2/5) was the only Yankees member to hit.

November Southgate (3/4) hit well for Giants.

Yankees player/coach Luwayne du Plessis threw all nine innings, conceding nine hits, giving up four walks and striking out eight Giants hitters. Giants utilised three pitchers – US-born Connor Walsh for three innings, Canadian Jaz Shergill for two innings, and Kurt Pretorius for four innings. Giants left 10 runners on base compared to the eight left by Yankees.
