Iris Hermanus turned 90-years-old on Sunday 3 February and says she is grateful to God for taking her this far.

The very active and energetic woman has had a string of celebrations and hosted another celebration with the St Andrew’s Seniors’ Club members last Tuesday at the St Andrews church in Retreat.

Hermanus, who has 10 children, 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, says she feels truly blessed to have lived to see her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. “We only have God to thank for all this. It is Him that allows us to see the days and see our children grow. God has blessed us and for that I’m really thankful,” she said.

One would think that with age catching up on her she would slow down; however Hermanus is not a typical 90-year-old.

She still sings in the choir, she is part of Mothers Unite and is still the chairperson of the St Andrew’s club that she formed almost 16 years ago.“I’m really grateful to the church for allowing me to participate in all these programmes and to run the seniors’ club. I would also like to thank the church for giving me the hall for my birthday. I’m very busy at church and that keeps me going. I just can’t sit at home and do nothing,” she said.

Surrounded by friends and family who shared a meal with her and others dropping off gifts one after the other, Hermanus said she is truly blessed and appreciates the love that she gets from her family and the church. “Without them I wouldn’t be able to do this. The love they show for me is truly amazing. My children organised my first party and it was big,” she said.

Her words of encouragement to young people are: “Honour your mother and father, If you do that you will be blessed. Your parents hold your blessings. It is sad nowadays that children take their parents to the old age home and never bother to go visit. There are so many parents at the old age homes and no-one cares to go visit them. Their children have abandoned them,” she said.

One of the seniors’ club members, Louis Mentor (79) said they are favoured to have someone like Hermanus. “She is energetic, still vibrant and always goes an extra mile for others. We truly thank God for someone who is always willing to help and always there to give advice and listen to you. She is also a great giver and her devotion to the church is to be admired,” he said.
