Learners of 10 schools across Mitchell’s Plain competed for a chance to win R20 000 for their schools.

Thanks to a partnership between Liberty Promenade Mall and non-profit organisation Read to Rise the shopping centre has established a competition to promote and encourage the importance of reading and art.

As part of the competition, learners had to produce a play derived from Oaky the happy tree, a book by local author Athol Williams.

The book is part of the Oaky series and is about an oak tree that discovers the secret to being happy.

Mitchell’s Plain, Huguenot, AZ Berman Road, Liesbeeck, Highlands, Dennegeur Avenue, Littlewood, Meadowridge, Montagu Drive and Rocklands primary schools each performed a 10-minute theatrical play adapted from the book.

Williams says the translation of this book into a stage play provides valuable exercises in reading comprehension and active learning.

“I am delighted to be part of this initiative with Liberty Promenade because the youth in Mitchell’s Plain are in need of rolemodels from their own community, and this opportunity can only inspire our talented learners to reach their full potential and unlock their creativity,” he says.

The food court was transformed into a wonderland, equipped with a theatre-like stage.

“The Oaky Stage Play Competition has created a lot of excitement amongst the public, our shoppers and, most importantly, the participating schools. We look forward to sharing this enriching initiative with all our shoppers,” says Dorothea Wright, general manager of Liberty Promenade.

“We are committed to our community and especially enriching the lives of the youth and encouraging education. With this in mind, we are proud to sponsor 1600 Oaky the happy tree books for our participating Grade 3 learners.”

The first round of the competition was held on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 November where the top four plays were chosen to be performed on Saturday.

Meadowridge Primary School won with Rocklands Primary School in second, Liesbeeck Primary in third and and AZ Berman in fourth. Each participant received a goodie bag and the top four schools each won a share of the prize money.
