Hawkers’ stock stored

2018-10-02 06:01

A storage facility manned by hawkers in the Town Centre will soon take effect as part of a council development initiative.

The initiative was further discussed at the August Mitchell’s Plain Area Coordinating Team (Act) meeting.

“The facility was identified together with the Trader Association. The location is facing 7th Avenue,” says Solomon Philander, ward 79 councillor.

“The traders informed the administration that they were promised storage space at the time of the upgrade of Town Centre. This then became a priority to ensure that this commitment was honoured. We managed to find space for 30 fresh-produce traders that can make use of the storage space. The United Hawkers’ Forum as an entity will work together with Hawkers Against Crime by means of allocating 15 people per association. This will ultimately see the enforcement in Town Centre; no-one will be allowed to overnight to guard their stock and that the bylaw will be applied.”

The City of Cape Town Economic and Tourism Department will be the owner of the facility.

“An agreement with the United Hawkers’ Forum will be entered into to manage the facility as an entity,” says Philander.

“In the past when bylaw enforcement took place the traders reminded the City that they had been promised storage when they moved to make way for the Town Centre upgrade. The traders kept the City accountable for the storage space. Together we explored and found a suitable place.”

The storage space will be opened following the completion and confirmation of all parties.

“We await the hawkers’ complete list for occupation and the department will ensure that the agreement is entered into with the hawkers as resolved in our Act meeting,” says Philander.
