Hawks land on local counterfeit clothes

2016-03-08 06:00

Police have made a breakthrough in the counterfeit clothing trade after raiding a factory in Observatory.

According to Captain Fredrik van Wyk, a provincial police spokesperson, the Western Cape Hawks searched one of the clothing businesses in Scott Road and confiscated a large consignment of counterfeit clothing worth a substantial amount.

“Investigators discovered that the clothing that was being manufactured on the premises was indeed counterfeit,” he says.

“It was also revealed that some of the clothing garments had tagged, branded labels. The Hawks confiscated 26 plastic bags filled with counterfeit clothing and also seized 16 clothing machines that need to remain unused at the premises until the investigation is concluded.

“The clothing factory warehouse employed an estimated 42 workers on a daily basis. There were 46 overlocker machines found on the premises.”

A case of contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act is being investigated against the owner of the business. No arrests have been made yet.
