The Students Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (Shawco) from the University of Cape Town based in Kensington took their services to one of their partners last week.

GrandWest’s employees enthusiastically took the opportunity to have their general health assessed when the organisation visited the complex in Goodwood.

The 74 staff members who participated in the health screenings at Shawco’s mobile clinic, Big Mama, were eager for information about improving their health and showed an interest in learning more about the community health services offered by the organisation.

This initiative is run by about 500 to 800 volunteers from the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences. Over 3000 people in underprivileged communities across the Western Cape receive much needed primary health-care services at mobile clinics run by the organisation, with significant funding support from GrandWest. These no-pay clinics often serve as the only port of call for the sick and injured who struggle to access primary health care services or preventative initiatives. In 2015, Shawco ran 200 clinics, saw 2832 patients and referred 470 patients for further treatment.

“GrandWest is proud to partner with these health clinics, which have become an integral part of the communities they serve,” says Heidi Edson, social economic development manager for Sun International.
