Police presence has been beefed up in Ocean View following the violent demonstrations last night (Wednesday 26 February). Ocean View police spokesperson, Sgt Leon Fortuin confirmed that one man was seriously injured during the riot which resulted in several buildings being set alight. He later died in hospital.Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith said in a statement: “The City of Cape Town has decided to direct some of the staff employed in terms of the Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (Leap), to support existing City enforcement services and police working in Ocean View to quell a flare-up of violence in recent days.”However, according to residents this did very little to calm tensions between gangs and the community. It is alleged there was a shooting incident at about 10:00 today (Thursday 27 February). The perpetrators are yet to be apprehended.Police from the anti-gang unit and Leap officers carried out raid operations throughout the day.Smith said the community should refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “The City understands that residents are frustrated and that the violent backlash we have witnessed in the last 12 hours is driven by the anger around yet another senseless killing of an innocent child,” he added.Police will continue to monitor the area.
