Hellenic draw level with Glendene United in log

2016-02-23 06:00

Hellenic have edged out the defending ABC Motsepe League champions Glendene United 1-0 in a closely contested encounter at the Idas Valley Stadium this weekend.

The decisive goal in the match came in the 82nd minute, following a free kick by Lionel Saal that enabled top marksman Alfonso Fraser to find the net for a superb goal. This allowed the “Greek gods” to come away with three valuable points.

The latest scenario sees Glendene United and Hellenic both left with two defeats each and both on 38 points after 18 matches.

But the Greek gods now have their noses in front with a goal difference of 17 goals following their 32 goals for and 15 against in comparison to Bradley August’s Glendene having 33 goals scored and 19 conceded.

Hellenic and Glendene United are now in a tight two-horse league race, but it would be foolish to ignore third-placed Steenberg United at 34 points.

Grassy Park United is in fourth place with 32 points, followed by Ikapa Sporting with 31 points.

They all have a chance of wearing the league crown and an opportunity of striking it big at the promotion national play-offs for a slot in the national first division.

Nevertheless, coach Theo Hempe’s Grassy Park United side continued their good form and secured a well-deserved 2-1 win against neighbours Steenberg United in a southern suburbs derby at the Solo Street sports venue.
