Playing soccer abroad is a dream most young soccer players in Cape Town aspire to, yet few have made it into a reality.

For one 17-year-old from Bokmakierie, the dream may be one step closer, should he be able to have a taste of it when his school’s team make their way to the United Kingdom in October.

Ashton van der Vent has been playing soccer for most of his life, the goalkeeper dreams of playing for his beloved Manchester United in the future.

Now, the Grade 12 pupil at City Mission School has been afforded the opportunity to play against a number of schools and academies after the club he plays for, Trinity Spurs Development Football Club, tour the “Home of football”.

However, one stumbling block still exists for Van der Vent; he will need to raise R31 000 before September in order to book his seat on the trip.

He already has had the opportunity to go to England in the past; however, his fundraising efforts were for nought, as his mother Mandy explains.

“Two years ago, the school was also selected to go to London, but only a few children could go and Ashton was also selected, so I asked one of the community guys to help me, because I did not know where to start. I don’t know what happened, but nothing happened and no money came in, so he did not go.”

For this trip Ashton was interviewed by Ryan O’Connor, KFM’s breakfast show host in which O’Connor tried to mobilise businesses to get on board.

The R30 900 is needed to cover Ashton’s return trip to England and excludes the funds needed to purchase new soccer boots and other items that he will need for the tour.
