Can we still dream the impossible dream? Can we still believe the words of our former President, Nelson Mandela, “It always seems impossible until it’s done”?

Yes we can, says Bianca Bloemstein, a 14-year-old Grade 9 learner of Princeton High school in Mitchell’s Plain.

Because of her natural skill, hard work, determination and hunger for success, she is proudly representing her school as part of the Western Province and Western Cape Schools Netball team, which she achieved under challenging circumstances.

Tragically, Bianca lost her 35-year-old father in November last year after he suffered a heart attack on the same day her grandmother passed away. Her father was her number one supporter, who cheered her on every weekend when she played matches for the Weltevrede Netball Club. This traumatic and tragic event had a tremendous emotional and financial effect on her and her family as her father was also the only breadwinner. Her mother now needs to take care of her grandfather, who is ill, and she cannot work. Yet, with the moral support of her family, friends, the school and netball club these circumstances did not stop Bianca from pushing forward to reach for her dream.

She will take part in the South African Schools Netball Tournament in Boksburg next week.

However, she needs to raise R8000, but is determined to attend the event and appeals to the broader community for support. Any donations are most welcome.
