Luke Koeries from Ocean View might only be a Grade 12 learner but he has a big heart for his community.

Koeries started a non-profit-organisation (NPO) Kids are Kids in his community, last year, so that children can have a safe place. The organisation helps children in Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Lavender Hill through various programmes and different activities in a safe space.

Since he started the organisation, Koeries has done several projects. He is currently working on another massive project to bring Easter joy to children in Masiphumelele and Ocean View. Last year the NPO reached more than 4000 children and this year Koeries hopes to reach even more. In his previous interview with People’s Post Koeries said: “It was an amazing experience. To be able to bring so much joy to children can’t be put into words.”

During last year’s event a fire truck was deployed into the area and children got to play and learn as they enjoyed an Easter egg hunt.

Koeries described last year’s event as very exciting. He said joy was evident on children’s faces. “It was such a wonderful day, and seeing kids running freely without being scared of anything was really nice,” Koeries said then.

Talking about his plans for this year Koeries says they want to make it even bigger and more fun. “We need all the help we can get to collect the Easter eggs,” he said

The event will be making its third return to the area and they are appealing for people to assist. “When you do your shopping for your kids this year, please buy one or two extra eggs for the underprivileged children. It will mean a lot to them,” says Koeries.

This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday 30 March from 12:30. “We will have a day full of fun with local show cars from Ocean View doing a park off, we will also have the Emergency Volunteers Support (EVS) Ocean View Unit having some fun with the kids and showing them around the emergency vehicles,” says Koeries.
