Pensioners at Third Avenue in Grassy Park are having it hard following a damage caused to their house by last week’s storm.

Joan Strange (74) and her husband Gordon (78) are among the scores of people who were affected by the bad weather two weeks ago.

The roof of their house, which is about 75-years-old, was blown away in the evening on Friday 21 June.

The couple stays alone and have no children. They depend on their pension grant and say they cannot afford to cover the costs of fixing the house on their own.

Joan was born in the house and later inherited it from her family.

Gordon says the house has a significant meaning to them and they would not want to move anywhere else as it is the only thing Joan has from her late parents.

He says they understand it is old and needs serious repairs, but the storm made things even worse.

The house is built of pine trees and zinc sheets. It comprises two bedrooms, a kitchen and a dining room.

The damage affected half of it and they had to squeeze their furniture into the partially affected rooms.

“We will appreciate any help that we may get. It does not have to be money. All we need is to have a safe house to live in again.

“The current state is worrisome as my wife is no longer in good health and she did not take this well,” says Gordon.

Joan could only say: “It hurts, I can’t even describe how I feel. I am lost of words.”

Their niece, Kayla Khan says it is sad to see the elderly in such a frustrating situation and took it to social media to appeal for help.V For more information call Kayla Khan on 081 071 3445.
