Two players from Kensington and Maitland are among 18 girls from the Ikapa United Football Club’s u.17 girls’ team that will be going to Dallas, USA on Thursday 22 March.

Each of the team members selected for the International Girls’ Cup taking place in April need to raise R27 500 to cover their travelling costs. The girls come from areas such as Kensington, Maitland, Mitchell’s Plain, Glassy Park, Lansdowne, Blue Downs and other suburbs in the Peninsula.

Although this is supposed to be an exciting moment for the team, some players are struggling to raise the funds, including 16-year-old Ember Edwards from Kensington. She says her parents are trying to get her sponsorship and are paying an amount from their pockets, but she has not reached the target yet. She is appealing for donations to help her achieve her dream

“This opportunity means a lot to me – it is once in a lifetime. I will appreciate any help I can get,” she says.

Coach Shahdiedah McCloed says that as the time of departure grows closer, the team worries about not having enough money to pay the travelling costs for all the girls.

She is also urging the public to support the team and make their dreams a reality.

McCloed says: “I have always wanted to have a great effect on young people out there and this is their opportunity. Please help us get there. These girls are the first from South Africa to partake in this tournament but unfortunately some of them come from disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford to pay for their trips. They need any monetary donations they could possibly get.”

It is reported that the team is in good form for their tournament, having recently won local matches, including their match against the UCT team on Friday 16 February. V For more information, call Shahdiedah McCloed on 084 864 0722 or Sharon Isaac on 078 473 1747.
